Smoke Alarms...
How Many? Positioning Testing
A smoke alarm is the easiest way to alert you to the danger of fire, giving you precious time to escape. It's cheap, easy to get hold of and easy to fit. There's no excuse for not having one.
HOW MANY ALARMS DO I NEED?
-
The more you have, the safer you'll be. You should have at least one on every floor of your home.
-
Consider putting additional alarms in rooms with several electrical appliances i.e TV's, DVD players, Hi-fi's etc.
POSITIONING
-
Always put them where you will be able to hear them throughout your home, particularly when you are asleep.
-
The best place is on the ceiling, near or at the middle of the room or hall. The alarm should be at least 30 cm (one foot) away from a wall or light.
-
DON'T fit Smoke alarms in the kitchen or bathroom where they can easily be set off by steam or cooking fumes.
TESTING
-
Test the alarm once a week by pressing the test button.
-
Once a year change the battery (unless it's a ten-year alarm)
-
Twice a year open the case and gently vacuum the inside using the soft- brush attachment to remove dust from the sensors. If it doesn't open, vacuum through the holes.
-
After 10 years it's best to get a whole new alarm.
FACT!
You are 4 times more likely to die in a house fire if you dont have a Smoke Alarm!
