1/12/2008 -ANOTHER SEA FRONT FIRE HITS SKEGNESS

AN electrical fault is likely to have caused the Square Peg fire in Grand Parade, Skegness, on Monday evening

Following an investigation by Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue it is believed the fire started due to an electrical fault in a ground floor office.

More than 70 fire fighters and 15 fire engines tackled the blaze at its height, which ripped through the Square Peg and Whisky A Go Go complex, after a fire broke out at around 5.20pm in the cellar.

They battled through the night to control the fire and started damping down the building on Tuesday at around 8am.

The full extent of the damage is not known but the pubs and the Promenade chip shop are still standing.

Thirteen people were evacuated from flats in Edinburgh Avenue behind the fire and East Lindsey District Council found alternative accommodation for them.

An ELDC spokesman has now confirmed those people have returned to their homes.

He said the council was working with Lincs Building Consultants to ensure the safety of the complex and a crane was used to remove some roof tiles, timber and glass.

Hoarding has now been put up around the site.

Grand Parade was closed as the structural stability of the building was checked, but re-opened on Wednesday at 5.30pm.
